064: TYCI Zine #4

"...we explore and celebrate all things femme, providing an open forum for discussion and a place to share ideas and make connections. We write about things which affect us and put together features on art, theatre, music, film, politics, current affairs and most things in between, interviewing interesting women we think you need to know about."

Check out TYCI, a collective run by women!

All about empowerment and celebration of women! I had the great opportunity to supply an illustration for the TYCI cover. If you are in Glasglow, Scotland, UK you'll want to make sure to pick up your free zine-Super coooOOOOoool.

Also, the wonderful people at TYCI wrote a little something about my work on their website. To see the feature go to http://www.tyci.org.uk/wordpress/?p=999

Thank you to Lauren and the TYCI team who has helped to make this happen! I'm gonna have to go visit Scotland one day and make it to their meetings and events :)

A amazinnnnng picture of my really good art buddy, Thomas Teraoka, in NY! What's that he's holding? My self-published ABC's book!!! This picture makes me so happy  :) If his name sounds familiar it's because he's part of PBJ. He goes to CALARTS and is amazing. Very talented!!!

There are only a couple books (< 10) left! To get your hands on a limited-edition, numbered, and signed ABC's book, order them here at my shop!

062: Artemisia Gold Vol.1

Happy New Year!

For my first post of the year I would like to talk a little bit about a wonderfully magical zine called "Artemisia Gold, Vol. 1" a art and music zine. I received this handmade booklet in the mail earlier this month, and felt it was a sign for great things to come this year!! It is a wonderful compilation of visual work and music! This book was initiated last year, by Liz Layton, a good friend of mine that I met in Iceland. Here's a bit on what you can find in the zine...

The visual artists featured include:
Amanda Richardson
and me

The musical mix includes:
A La Carte
Boyfriends
Bradley Bailey
Dana Gillian
Jake, Jake, Jake & the multiple Jet Ski Collisions
Medam Boat
Mikhail Alley
Prince Rama
RKPK

Always love the decorated packages and little art prints and goodies from Liz!

Here's a little Q&A with Liz!

Will the zine be available to the public? If so, how can others get their hands on one?
1) yes! The zine is currently available as trade with other zine makers, which I will soon make a blog post about, on http://lizlayton.wordpress.com/. Also, it can be purchased as a prize, on this fundraising site: http://www.indiegogo.com/lizlayton/x/1958319

What made you decide to make a zine?
2) I have made zine-type objects in the past, usually just online one, for fun when I was a kid. This first official printed zine I made, is in response to a post on my FAVORITE online magazine (and mag in general), Rookie, on Rookiemag.com. They have everything amazing, to do with art, music, culture, feminism, creative stories, and also informative articles.

Are there any new projects you are working on?!
3) I am currently working on my first official music video, with actors, a set, etc, for a band lead by my friend, Bradley Bailey. I also have a joint painting/installation/performance exhibit coming up with my friend Jaime Santos-Prowse, at Nelson's Gallery, here in East Tenn., going on through the month of March. And, I am starting to collect equipment to start an independent film production company.

Don't forget to get your hands on "Artemisia Gold, Vol. 1" by supporting Liz and her film production dreams by going to http://www.indiegogo.com/lizlayton/x/1958319 Please help in any way possible to make her dream a reality!

061: Sketchbooks

Hello friends!

Been doing a little bit of Christmas cleaning and I found my stash of sketchbooks. Its kind of insane...I think I'm a sketchbook junkie. For now I'll have to stay away from purchasing them. Anywhooo, I've started on my fourth sketchbook this year! Below is my first drawing...meant for PBJ so I will be posting it over there soon. I had a lot of fun with this one. Oh! Also, if you are an artist or just love to draw, PBJ will be accepting more artists! Just check out "About PBJ" for more info.

Speaking of sketchbooks, I received The Sketchbook Projects: Limited Edition: Distance&Time: Vol II book! I was very surprised and thrilled to find that I was chosen as one of the few artists to have a two page feature. I was blushing :)

On a side note, my webmaster has really been telling me to get on the whole social media wagon so you can now find me at all the places below...

058: Printing & Publishing

Hey everyone!
Hope you all are doing great :)

As I mentioned before, I have a book that I've finished and I've sent off to the printers. I am very excited about it and have just received the final proof today. I really would like to show some sneak peeks but I've promised those who have signed up for my newsletters that they will be seeing it first. ah! So, please, sign up for the newsletters

What I do want to do is tell you a bit about self publishing and printing. At least, what I have learned so far!
Currently listening to BIRDY

A Little Bit About
PRINTING&PUBLISHING

First, do your research on printing companies, both local and online. You really want to pick a place that will meet your printing needs. I was really looking into price and quality. Here are a couple that I have looked into...I'm missing a couple, but hopefully I can find them and I'll add em here later :)(Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions!)

Oahu Printing Companies:
Aloha Graphics: http://alohagraphics.com/
Obun Hawaii: http://www.obunhawaii.com/
Professional Images Hawaii: http://www.proimagehawaii.com/ (I went with Proimages. They have multiple locations around Oahu...I had several nice walks)

Online Printing Companies:
Dog Ear Publishing: www.dogearpublishing.net (This company is really helpful and friendly. I'll definitely consider using Dog Ear when I can afford it.)
VioVio: www.viovio.com (I was really excited about Viovio because you only pay for those books that are printed. They even have an online library that other people can look at and purchase your book(s) from. Sadly, I was just having difficulty customizing my images (which are an odd size) to their templates. In other words, I was a wee bit lazy! That, and I really wanted my book to be a certain size that they didn't offer.)

What's great is that they all give quotes on their website and get back to you quickly. But, you need to know what those printing terms are first! Proimages asked me to call them since I had left most of the quote questionnaires with "I'm not sure". oopsie. Saddle ... bleed....What? So they educated me!

Here are just a couple
TERMS
that I ran into:

Full Bleed: Refers to the area of the image that will be trimmed off so that your image covers the whole page. Your image will have no white margin and part of your image will be cut-off. If you go with this option you will want to include an additional 1/8" along the edges of your image.
No Bleed: If your image has a white border, it does not require a bleed. This is the more economical option compared to Bleed.
Perfect Binding: Type of binding. I believe most paper and soft cover books are perfect bound. The cover is customized by a typesetter so that you will have a spine that goes with your front & back cover. The pages are then glued to the spine of the wraparound cover. I went with this option, since aesthetically, it is the most professional.
Saddle Stitching: Type of binding. The most economical option where two or three staples are inserted along the folded edge. I considered this option since it's the cheapest (I'm so chang!) and I have a friend who uses saddle stitching and its quite nice, but something about staples and little kids didn't sit well with me.
Proof: A sample of your final product so that you can see how your colors, images, text, binding, etc came out. They charge for proofs, so be sure that you know what you want before you send the final product off to be printed.

After you have figured out which company you would like to go with and how you would like it to be printed, you will be given a proof.  Printing is not cheap, so be sure that you tell them if something is wrong with the proof. My proof needed some changes- my images were not centered and my cover just did not show up how I wanted due to slight changes in color, so I ended up illustrating another one...which actually worked out a lot better! :) Once you confirm that you love, love, love your proof, they will start printing your products and assemble them! Yay :) I can't wait!

Thank you to all those who have been giving me honest feedback and support!
Love you all and Happy Thanksgiving!
